Child Abuse Investigations:
Illustrates the importance of thorough and accurate investigations of child abuse. Officers will gain knowledge of investigative process and best practices in dealing with child victims. Officer’s role in a multi-disciplinary investigation will also be discussed.

Crime Scene Processing and Evidence Collection:
Layered approach to processing a crime scene will be discussed. Essentials of crime scene protection, division of labor, proper collection of evidence and documentation are reinforced. Officers will process one of several mock crime scenes.

Interrogation Law and Techniques:
Covers the implications of the 5th, 6th and 14th Amendments to the US Constitution on interviews and interrogations of suspects. The class also provides insights into proven techniques through videos of actual interviews and interrogations. Also discusses Miranda, theme development and how to make sure a full confession is obtained.
 
Police Shootings:
Discusses the legal and practical issues facing officers in a deadly force incident. Different stages of the investigation and available legal options to officers who find themselves the subject of a use of force investigation are discussed.

Preparing for an Aggressive Defense Counsel:
Illustrates techniques used by defense to discredit, disprove and create doubt in the state’s prosecution. Officers will be more confident and competent in future courtroom situations.
 
Responding to Persons with Mental Illness:
Educates participants how to respond to citizens suffering from various mental illnesses. Officers will gain knowledge of commonly encountered mental illnesses and learn proven techniques to diminish violence and use of force. Both officer and citizen safety is emphasized.

Sex Crimes Investigations:
Illustrates the importance of thorough and accurate investigations of sex crimes with both adult and child victims. Knowledge of investigative process and best practices in dealing with victims of sex crimes will be discussed.
